Sine bars are frequently used as a dimensional measurement tool in quality laboratories to produce a known angle, reliant on the sine rule, for checking devices such as inclinometers and digital protractors.

Generally, these devices utilize a known distance between precision quality cylinders which are set at opposite ends of a bar or plate. With this known distance, a user can set one cylinder on a flat surface such as a leveled granite surface plate, and raise the other cylinder a known distance off the base surface. This is typically achieved using gage blocks.

By creating a hypotenuse with the flat surface parallel to the centers of the two cylinders, the sine rule allows a calculation to be made to determine the angle of the parallel relative to the base surface.

It’s important to ensure the center to center distance between cylinders, the radius of each cylinder, and the parallelism of the flat surface to the radius centers are all known since the sine bar accuracy relies on the precise measurements of these objects.
