An automotive transmission manufacturer discovered an issue related to the surface finish on parts that they received from one of their suppliers. A small percentage of the parts were too rough, an issue that could have caused serious warranty issues.  The supplier had a roughly one week lead time to produce a new batch. This gap would leave the manufacturer with a production line stoppage unless they could sort out which parts from the batch good or bad.

They reached out to J.A. King because their internal inspection lab did not have the bandwidth to measure the parts quickly enough.  J.A. King was able to measure a total of 1,050 parts in a week. The cost to the transmission manufacturer for the inspection was $15,300, but they saved $25-50k by keeping the line running during that time. Additionally, they reduced their own risk by eliminating the future warranty issues associated with the bad parts.
