New SOLAS Requirements – Gross Weight Verification

Shipping ContainersEffective July, 1 2016, The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is implementing amendments to the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) convention. This amendment is being implemented to improve safety in the maritime cargo shipping process. This is meant to reduce the amount of tragedies at sea such as overturned or damaged vessels and potentially loss of life. The amendment requires all packed containers to have a verified gross mass recorded in a ship’s manifest prior to placement on the vessel.

What does this mean for you?

The requirements set forth in this amendment fall on the shipper of the goods in each container. Which means it is extremely important to have a calibrated weighing system in place when packaging, if goods are shipped overseas. A scale or load cell even slightly out of tolerance can make a large difference when quantities are taken into effect, which can result in halted shipments, and potentially loss of profit due to delays.

As a leader in the precision measurement industry since 1939, you can trust that J.A. King has your weighing process covered. We offer solutions for purchasing and maintaining load cells, shipping scales, truck scales, and more, so you can ensure you are within compliance for these new requirements.
