USER INSTRUCTIONS FOR
KING PNEUMATIC FABRIC STIFFNESS TESTER (PFST)
MODEL SASD-672

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

PURPOSE:

To determine the stiffness of fabric accurately in compliance with ASTM (Spec. D4032) circular bend test method.

OPERATION:

  • Remove tester from shipping container and place on a sturdy table or work bench with compressed air supply available. The readout on gauge should be at eye level when in use.
  • Attach compressed air supply to the filter-regulator inlet port via 1/4" nylon tubing (1/4 O.D. x
  • 040 wall type 1 grade ES). Supply air pressure should be about 60 psi to 120 psi but must never exceed 150 psi at any time.
  • With air pressure applied check to see that the regulator is adjusted for about 60 ± 2 psi on the pressure gauge. If necessary adjust pressure by turning knob on the regulator. Pull the knob up and turn to adjust then push it back down to lock in position.
  • Check the 1" diameter plunger to see if it is concentric with the orifice in the 4" x 4" plate (1/4" clearance all around) and that the bottom of the plunger is at least 1/8" above top surface of the orifice plate when air cylinder is fully retracted and air pressure is applied to the tester's regulator. To adjust plunger side clearance, loosen the two screws which holds orifice plate in position, and move plate in the direction needed then re-tighten the screws.
  • Actuate the tester plunger mechanism by placing one hand on each of the two palm valve buttons on each side of tester base and fully depress both buttons simultaneously. When plunger reaches the bottom of its stroke, remove both hands from valve buttons for plunger to return to its "up" position. Repeat this cycle several times to "exercise" the mechanism. Then check plunger downward speed by timing the down stroke from the instant the palm valves are depressed until the instant the plunger reaches bottom of its stroke. The down stroke time is factory set for 1.7 (+/- .2) seconds for the full stroke under no-load conditions. Speed adjustment is provided for by flow control valve located under the tester base only a small adjustment is required to change plunger speed noticeably. Recheck speed after each adjustment until correct speed (down stroke time) is obtained. (Locking ring may have to be removed from flow control valve before it is adjusted.)
  • Plug the charger to a receptacle and the output of the charger to the gauge. Switch "on" the gauge by pushing and momentarily holding the "on" button. (A quick push on the "on" button will not turn it on). Then push the "peak" button twice. The 1st push will give you "tension peak" and the 2nd push will be "compression peak".
  • There is a 4" x 8" clear plastic template provided with the unit. Place the template on the fabric to be tested. The length of the template perpendicular to the warp of the fabric (arrow on the template would be aligned with the warp of the fabric).
  • Mark, cut and fold the fabric once back to back and put the fabric on the orifice plate (under the plunger) ready to be tested.
  • If the display panel on the gauge has gone blank don't worry. When not in use it shuts itself down to save the battery. Just turn it back on.
  • When the steps outlined above have been followed the unit should be ready for use in testing fabric stiffness within range of it's instrument. See the gauge instructions on literature sheets and copy of ASTM standard test methods for stiffness of fabric.

NOTES:

  • J. A. King & Co., is offering a plunger alignment guide as an option (Part No. SASA-649).
  • Do not lay rigid material on tester platform (orifice plate) or anything that impedes the movement of plunger through the orifice plate (except the material to be tested) it will damage the gauge.
  • For FABRIC BURST TEST we do offer a kit to be used as an accessory to King Pneumatic Fabric Stiffness Tester (Part No. SASA-679).
  • Please DO READ the enclosed operating instructions booklet for the gauge printed by Chatillon.
  • We recommend you send the whole unit to J. A. King & Co., about once a year for service, calibration, alignment and certification.
  • Please DO READ the ASTM circular bend test method furnished by J. A. King & Co., Inc.
  • In case of any problems or questions relating to your fabric stiffness tester, do not hesitate to call J. A. King & Co. for technical support.
  • Thank you for doing business with J. A. King & Company, Inc.
