USER INSTRUCTIONS FOR
KING MANUAL FABRIC STIFFNESS TESTER (MFST)
MODEL SASD-671

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

PURPOSE:

To determine the stiffness of fabric accurately and economically, using the ASTM D4032 circular bend test method.

OPERATION:

  • Remove tester from shipping container and place on a sturdy table or work bench. The dial on gauge should be at eye level when in use.
  • Check the 1" diameter plunger to see if it is concentric with the orifice in the 4" x 4" plate (1/4" clearance all around) and that the bottom of the plunger is at least 1/8" above top surface of the orifice plate when the handle on stand is fully retracted in "up" position. To adjust plunger side clearance loosen the two screws which holds orifice plate in position, and move plate in the direction needed then re-tighten the screws.
  • There is a 4" x 8" clear plastic template provided with the unit. Place the template on the fabric to be tested. The length of the template perpendicular to the warp of the fabric (arrow on the template would be aligned with the warp of the fabric).
  • Mark, cut and fold the fabric once back to back and put the fabric on the orifice plate (under the plunger) ready to be tested.
  • Make sure the dial on the gauge is on zero and set the lock switch in position to hold the maximum force reading.
  • Push the handle down gently with steady motion.
  • Avoid very fast or very slow pushing and make sure free hand does not touch specimen as it is being forced through the ring. Push the specimen completely through the ring.
  • When you let the handle (and gauge) go up, let your hand gently go back with the handle so the gauge won't jump back up.
  • Jerking the handle or gauge on small capacity units will change the dial reading.
NOTES:
  • Bolt down the base to your table.
  • J. A. King & Co. is offering a plunger alignment guide as an option (part no. SASA-649).
  • For FABRIC BURST TEST we do offer a kit to be used with higher capacity gauges as an accessory (part no. SASD-679).
  • Please DO READ the enclosed operating instructions for the gauge printed by Chatillon.
  • We recommend you send the whole unit to J. A. King & Co. about once a year for service, calibration, alignment and certification.
  • Please DO READ the ASTM circular bend test method furnished by J. A. King & Co.
  • In case of any problems or questions relating to your fabric stiffness tester, do not hesitate to call J. A. King & Co. for technical support.
